There are many gems for PDF generation for Rails but the difficulty comes with picking and using one that fits your needs. Some of the most popular are Prawn/Prawnto, PDFKit and WickedPDF. Prawn/Prawnto is easy to get going quickly but it's formatting syntax makes the learning curve a bit more steep. Also as far as I could tell, the support for Rails 3 is iffy. PDFKit and WickedPDF use a separate library called wkhtmltopdf which, as the name suggests, processes html to create a PDF. This is really handy if you want to create PDFs from existing views.
Installing wkhtmltopdf
- For Windows you can find the executable here. For ease of use, installing to a filepath without spaces is recommended.
- For Linux You can follow these instructions.

Now that we have wkhtmltopdf installed, we can move on to using it in Rails. I ended up using WickedPDF because PDFKit did not work in my environment for unknown reasons. Hence I will explain my WickedPDF configuration for you. If you would like more information about PDFKit you can find a railscast here. The difference between the two is that PDFKit will render your already existing views and layouts as a PDF while WickedPDF separates PDFs into their own layouts, stylesheets, and .pdf.erb views. It is more a matter of preference because both have about the same level of functionality. While it could be argued that PDFKit is more DRY, I think of Wicked PDF as being more versatile.
Installing WickedPDF

And that is it! This should have created your config/initializers/wicked_pdf.rb file. At this point we need to change the path to your wkhtmltopdf library, which we installed in our previous step.

*how to properly detect a windows environment - you shouldn't need to do this but it is helpful if you are switching between the two like I am.
There are other options available to include in your initializer. You can find details of them at the WickedPDF repository on github, but this is all that is really needed to get started.
Restart your server and we are ready to go!
Using Wicked PDF
Now we should create our layouts, stylesheets, and maybe a view.

The show_as_html option is really helpful when debugging display issues as it will display the page as html instead of rendering the PDF.

That should be it! There was a bit of hacking, but it's a robust way of getting the job done! You can now render what you would like in your show.pdf.erb view! Currently it will render with the user's name, the page numbers, and today's date at the bottom of the page. Wicked PDF has plenty of helpers (like the page numbers) and you can find more info at the wicked pdf github.
